The author of the Gospel of Mark was from Jerusalem. There is no record of his father’s name, though it was customary for children to be named after their parents. Since his father is not identified, this suggests that he may have been dead. His mother’s name was Mary, and she was economically comfortable and socially prominent, especially among the followers of Jesus. Her home in Jerusalem served as a meeting place for Christians.
Education has always been expensive–either by practical experience or in the classroom. The Gospel of Mark draws from information about both Jewish and Roman culture, suggesting that Mark was well-educated. He has a polished writing style. There are more Latin loanwords in this Gospel than the others. One reason for this may be that Mark wrote the original manuscript in Rome for Gentile believers. The document was copied and recopied as it circulated among the early churches, and serves as the background for the meditations in this volume.
