Mark 5
Close literal translaiton
1. And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
2. And he coming from the boat, a man with an unclean spirit from the tombs immediately met him.
3. Who had [his] dwelling in the tombs, and not even with chains anyone was able to bind him.
4. For he often had been bound with foot shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the foot shackles had been crushed, and no one was able to subdue him.
5. And every night and day in the tombs and in the hills, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6. And seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down before him.
7. And crying out in a great voice, he said, “What to me and to you, Jesus, Son of the Highest God? I adjure you by God do not torment me.”
8. For he was saying to him, “Come out, you unclean spirit, out of the man.”
9. And he was questioning him, “What is your name?” And he says to him, “Legion is my name because we are many.”
10. And he was begging him earnestly that he might not send them out of the region.
11. Now a great herd of pigs was there on the hillside grazing.
12. And they begged him saying, “Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter into them.”
13. And he permitted them. And after coming out, the unclean spirits entered into the pigs. And the herd rushed down the steep slope into the sea, about two thousand, and they were drowned in the sea.
14. And those feeding them fled and announced in the city and the country. And they went out to see the thing that happened.
15. And they came to Jesus, and they saw the demonized man sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, the one having had the legion; and they were afraid.
16. And those who had seen how it had come about to the demonized man and concerning the pigs announce [it] to them.
17. And they began to beg him to depart from their borders.
18. And as he was getting into the boat, the demonized man was begging him that he might be with him.
19. And he did not permit him, but said to him, “Go to your home, to your own [people], and announce to them how much the Lord has done for you and shown you mercy.
20. And he went out and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him and all were amazed.
21. And after Jesus had again crossed over in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.
22. And one of the synagogue rulers, Jairus by name, came, and when he saw him, he fell at his feet.
23. And he was earnestly imploring him saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. [I implore] that you come and place you hands on her so that she may be healed and live.”
24. And he went with him, and a great crowd was following him and pressed against him.
25. And a woman, having a flow of blood twelve years,
26. And having suffered many things under many physicians, and having spent all she had, and being benefited not at all, but rather became worse,
27. Having heard about Jesus, coming in the crowd behind, she touched his garment,
28. For she was saying, “If I may touch even his garments, I shall be healed.”
29. And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up and she knew in her body that she had been healed from the scourge.
30. And immediately, Jesus knowing in himself power from him had gone out, he turned about in the crowd and was saying, “Who touched my garments?”
31. And his disciples were saying to him, “You see the crowd thronging, and yet you were saying who touched me?”
32. And he was looking about to see the one who had done this.
33. So the woman fearful and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came, and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be healed from your scourge [many writers render this word as affliction, plague, or illness].”
35. While he was speaking, [messengers] came from [the house of] the synagogue ruler saying, “Your daughter has died, why still trouble the teacher?”
36. And when Jesus overheard [or ignored] the word spoken, he says to the synagogue ruler, “Do not fear, only believe.”
37. And he did not permit anyone to follow him [except] Peter and James and John, the brother of James.
38. And they came to the house of the synagogue ruler, and he saw a commotion, much weeping and wailing.
39. And entering, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child did not die but is sleeping.”
40. And they were laughing at him; but he, after casting them all out, took along the father of the child and the mother and those with him, and he enters where the child was.
41. And taking the hand of the child, he said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you get up.”)
42. And the little girl immediately got up and began to walk about, for she was twelve years old. And they were amazed at once with great amazement.
43. And he earnestly commanded them that no one should know this; and he said something should be given to her to eat.
