1. And he went from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.
2. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many, when they heard, were amazed, saying, “Where did this one get these things; and what is such wisdom which is given to this one; and what are such miracles which are coming about through his hands?”
3. Is this not the builder, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense in him.
4. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown, and among his relatives, and in his own family.”
5. And he was not able to do any mighty work there, except by placing his hands on a few sick people, he healed them.
6. And he was amazed because of their unbelief. And he went around the villages teaching.
7. And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
8. And he gave instruction to them that they might take nothing for the journey except a staff only—no bread, no sack, no money in the belt.
9. But wearing sandals and do not put on two garments.
10. And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, remain there until you go out from there.
11. And whatever place does not receive you nor do they listen to you, as you are going out from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a witness against them.”
12. And they went out and proclaimed that people should repent.
13. And they cast out many demons, and anointed many sick people with oil, and healed them.
14. And King Herod heard, for his name had become known, and they were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead and because of this the powers are working in him.”
15. But others were saying, “He is Elijah.” But others were saying, “He is a prophet like one of the prophets.”
16. But when Herod heard, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!”
17. For Herod himself had sent and seized John and bound him in prison because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother because he had married her.
18. For John said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.”
19. But Herodias held a grudge against him and desired to kill him, and she was not able.
20. For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, he guarded him. And when he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he listened to him gladly.
21. And an opportune day arrived, when Herod on his birthday made a banquet for his great men, and his military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee,
22. When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”
23. And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give to you, as far as half of my kingdom.”
24. And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.”
25. And she returned immediately, with haste, to the king and asked, saying, “I want that, right now, you might give to me, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”
26. And although being very sad, the king, because of his oaths and those reclining with him, did not want to refuse her.
27. And immediately, the king commanded an executioner to bring his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison.
28. And he carried his head on a platter, and he gave it to the girl, and the young girl gave it to her mother.
29. And when they heard, his disciples came and took his corpse and placed it in a tomb.
30. And the apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and all that they had taught.
31. And he said to them, “Come you yourselves alone to a solitary place and rest a little.” For the ones coming and the ones going were many, and they did not even have time to eat.
32. And they departed in the boat into a solitary place by themselves.
33. And they saw them departing, and many recognized them, and by foot from all the cities, they ran together there, and got there ahead of them.
34. And after he came out, he saw a large crowd, and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
35. And when the hour was late, his disciples came to him and said to him, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late.
36. Release them so that they may go away into the surrounding fields and villages, and they might buy for themselves what they might eat.”
37. But answering, he said to them, “You give them to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and purchase 200 denarii worth of bread and give to them to eat?”
38. But he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go see.” When they found out, they said, “Five and two fish.”
39. And he commanded them to have everyone sit down group by group upon the green grass.
40. And they sat row by row in groups of hundreds and in groups of fifties.
41. And after taking the five loves and two fish, and after looking up to heaven, he gave thanks, and he broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples, so that they might set before them, and he divided the two fish among them all.
42. And all ate and were filled..
43. And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments, and of the fish.
44. And those eating the loaves were five thousand men.
45. And immediately, he urged his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he sent away the crowd.
46. And after he bade them farewell, he went away to the mountain to pray.
47. And when evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
48. And when he saw them straining while they were rowing, for the wind was against them, around the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea, and was about to pass by them.
49. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they thought he was a ghost, and they cried out.
50. For they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage. I am. Fear not.”
51. And he got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped, and beyond measure, they were amazed in themselves.
52. For they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
53. And after they crossed over, they came to the land at Gennesaret and they anchored.
54. And as they got out of the boat, immediately they recognized him,
55. They ran about all that whole region, and they began to carry those who were sick on mats wherever they heard that he was.
56. And when he entered into villages, or cities, or the countryside, they placed the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment, and as many as touched him were healed.
