God’s Opportunity
Hundreds of people were fleeing the oppressive domination of a powerful monarch. In their escape, the monarch’s army pursued the escapees until they came to an impassable sea. They were at their extremity. Their leader, a shepherd of all things, stood at the edge of the sea and raised his staff. This provided an opportunity for God to demonstrate His presence. As the people stood watching, the waters began to part, and they crossed the Red Sea ahead of the Egyptian army. Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.
As Jesus and his disciples traveled through the Decapolis region, Jesus’ teaching and ministry attracted a huge crowd. These followers apparently packed lunches for themselves as they left their homes to follow Jesus. Day after day, people nibbled on their provisions until their supplies were exhausted after three days. “And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they may faint on the way, and some of them have come from afar.” (Mark 8:3) So the crowd was at its extremity—no food and a long distance home.
Standing on the bank of the Red Sea, or gathered around Jesus with an empty lunch sack, represents extremities people often face. Been there? Let’s see what God will do.
