The Gospel of Mark
Chapter 9
Close literal translation
1. And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you that there are some standing here who certainly will not taste death until they see the Kingdom of God having come in power.”
2. And after six days, Jesus took along Peter, and James, and John, and he took them up to a high mountain by themselves alone, and he was transfigured before them.
3. And his garments became shining, exceedingly white, as such that a launderer upon the earth is not able to whiten.
4. And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were speaking with Jesus.
5. And answering, Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. So let us make three tabernacles—one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
6. For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.
7. And a cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud. “This is my beloved Son, hear him.”
8. And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with themselves.
9. And as they were coming down from the mountain, he commanded them that they should tell no one what they saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.
10. And they kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” is.
11. And they were asking him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
12. But he said to them, “Indeed, Elijah comes first and restores all things, and how is it written concerning the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
13. But I say to you both that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they wished as it has been written about him.”
14. And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them and scribes disputing with them.
15. And immediately, all the crowd saw him, they were greatly amazed, and running forward, they greeted him.
16. And he asked them, “What were you discussing with them?”
17. And one out of the crowd said to him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, having a mute spirit.
18. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and becomes stiff; and I spoke to your disciples that they might cast it out, and they were not able.”
19. But answering, he said to them, “O faithless generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him to me.”
20. And they brought him to him. And seeing him, the spirit immediately threw him into convulsions; and falling to the ground, he rolled about foaming at the mouth.
21. And he asked his father, “How long a time has this been with him?” And he said, “From childhood.
22. And many times it has thrown him both into fire and water so that it might destroy him, but if you are able to do anything, help us, having compassion upon us.”
23. But Jesus said to him, “’If you are able?’ All things are possible to the one believing.”
24. Immediately, crying out, the father of the boy said, “I believe. Help my unbelief.”
25. But Jesus, seeing the crowd rushing together toward them, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again.”
26. And crying out and convulsing him much, it came out. And the boy became as if dead, so that many said, “He is dead.”
27. But Jesus, taking his hand, lifted him, and he stood up.
28. And after he entered into a house, his disciples privately asked him, “Why were we not able to cast it out?”
29. And he said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing except by prayer.”
30. And from there after they departed, they went through Galilee, and he did not wish that anyone should know.
31. For he was teaching his disciples, and he said to them, “The Son of Man will be given over into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and being killed, after three days, he will arise.”
32. But they did not understand the word and they were afraid to ask him.
33. And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?”
34. But they were silent, for they debated with one another on the road who was the greatest.
35. And after he sat down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
36. And taking a small child, he placed him in their midst and holding him in his arms, he said to them,
37. “Whoever shall receive one of such little children in my name receives me. And whoever receives me, does not receive me, but the one who sent me.”
38. John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone in your name casting out demons, and we forbade him because he was not following us.”
39. But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him. For there is no one who will perform a miracle in my name and be able quickly to speak evil of me.
40. For he who is not against us is for us.
41. For whoever may offer you a cup of water to drink because of my name, because you are Christ’s, he will certainly not lose his reward.
42. And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it is better for him if a large millstone is hung around his neck and he is thrown into the sea.
43. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better to enter into life crippled than to depart to Gehenna having two hands, to the unquenchable fire.
44. Where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.
45. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. For you to enter into life lame is better than having two feet to be cast into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire.
46. Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
47. And if your eye causes you to sin, throw it out. To enter into the Kingdom of God having one eye is better than having two eyes to be cast into Gehenna.
48. Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
49. For everyone with fire will be salted, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.
50. Salt is good, but if salt becomes unsalty, by what will you season it? Have in yourselves salt and be at peace with one another.
