A Favorite Place
Many people have a favorite place, a place they like to visit or perhaps live, a place to which they return again and again. For over twenty years, Alice and I spent weeks or months at the Manatee Hammock RV Park in Titusville, Florida. Over the years, we developed friendships with people from across the U.S., many from Canada. Unfortunately, we will not be returning to that RV park, and we miss our friends and the church we attended during our visits.
Jesus seemed to enjoy being near the Sea of Galilee. St. Mark said that after his healing of a paralyzed man and a confrontation with the guardians of orthodoxy, who criticized him, “And he went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he began teaching them.” (2:13) It is likely that Jesus remained some time at Capernaum before traveling south along the sea coast. Throughout the Gospels, thirteen major events in Jesus’ ministry occurred on or near the Sea of Galilee—he called disciples, taught beside the sea or from a boat, calmed a storm, walked on the water, fed a multitude, preached and healed along the shore, and appeared to his disciples beside the sea after his resurrection.
A place may involve scenery, but friends and the Father’s presence make it a favorite.
