Jesus’ Sudden Appearance
At a convention of more than ten thousand, there were several nationally known people in attendance. I was walking down a hall when one of the nationally known individuals came out of a room into the hall. His appearance surprised me and those around me. Many in the crowd rushed toward him.
This incident reminded me of Jesus and the descent of his disciples from the mountain, where they had apparently spent the night. The disciples had the singular experience of seeing Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus, and of being engulfed in a cloud of the divine presence from which a voice told them of Jesus’ messiahship.
In the valley, a large crowd had gathered around the remaining disciples, while some scribes were arguing with them, apparently about the disciples’ belief in the healing power of their leader. “And immediately, all the crowd saw him, they were greatly amazed, and running forward, they greeted him.” (Mark 9:15) They were likely amazed by Jesus’ sudden appearance at just the right time and perhaps by his countenance, for he was not the least bit challenged by the scribes’ criticism.
Jesus’ sudden appearance at just the right time still catches many believers by surprise. In fact, it could be today.
