The Gospel of Mark
Chapter 8
Close literal translation
1. In those days again, when a great crowd was there and not having anything to eat, calling his disciples, he said to them,
2. “I have compassion on the crowd, because now three days they have stayed with me, and they have nothing to eat.
3. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they may faint on the way, and some of them have come from afar.”
4. And his disciples answered him, “From where will anyone be able to feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?”
5. And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
6. And he directed the crowd to sit on the ground. And after he took the loaves and gave thanks, he broke the loaves and gave them to his disciples so that they might set them before them, and they distributed the loaves to the crowd.
7. And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, he said to place these before them also.
8. And they ate and were filled. And they took up the remaining fragments—seven large baskets.
9. Now there were about four thousand men. And he sent them away.
10. And immediately, getting into the boat with his disciples, he went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11. And the Pharisees came and began to argue with him by seeking from him a sign from heaven, testing him.
12. And groaning deeply in his spirit, he said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you that no sign shall be given to this generation.”
13. And leaving them, again embarking, he went to the other side.
14. And they forgot to take loaves, and they had nothing with them in the boat except one loaf.
15. And he commanded them, saying, “Watch out! Be aware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
16. And they were discussing with one another that they did not have any loaves.
17. And knowing this, he said to them, “Why are you discussing that you do not have bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Do you have hardened hearts?
18. Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?
19. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.”
20. “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.”
21. And he said to them, “Not yet are you understanding?”
22. And they came to Bethsaida. And they brought to him a blind man and they begged him that he might touch him.
23. And taking the hand of the blind man, he led him out of the village and spitting on his eyes, and placing his hands upon him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?”
24. And looking up, he said, “I see men, that is, as trees I see walking.”
25. Then again, he placed his hands on his eyes, and he opened his eyes, and he was restored, and he saw all things clearly.
26. And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not enter into the village, [nor tell anyone in the village]”
27. And Jesus and his disciples went out to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way, he asked his disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?”
28. And they responded to him, saying, “John the Baptist, and others, Elijah, but others that you are one of the prophets.”
29. And he asked them, “But you—who do you say I am?” Answering, Peter said to him, “You are the Christ.”
30. And he strictly warned them that they should tell no one about him.
31. And he began to teach them that it is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days to rise.
32. And openly he spoke the word. And taking him aside, Peter began to rebuke him.
33. But he, turning around and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan, because you are not thinking the things of God but the things of men.”
34. And calling to himself the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wishes to follow after me, let him deny himself, and let him take up his cross, and let him follow me.
35. For whoever desires to save his life, he will lose it. But whoever will lose his life on account of me and the gospel, he will save it.
36. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
37. For what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
38. F For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with his holy angels.”
