A Crop That Doesn’t Grow
There is a parable about a farmer who planted a crop, but it did not grow. The next year, he planted the same crop in another field—yet it did not grow. In the third year, he tried the same crop in yet another field, with the same result—it did not grow.
Just as the farmer faced repeated frustration, a similar pattern appears in the story of the wealthy young ruler who came to Jesus seeking to “inherit” eternal life. To him, Jesus said, “You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not give false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.” (Mark 10:19)
Jesus had the young man examine his “crop” by reciting the list of commandments that every Jewish boy would know (Deut. 5:16-21). If the young man’s “crop,” which he planted again and again, did not yield eternal life, Jesus would lead him to examine it more closely, indicating something was missing. The lesson in this story is timeless.
