The Gospel of Mark
Chapter 12
Close literal translation
1. And he began to speak to them in parables, “A man planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and he dug a winepress, and he built a tower, and he rented it to farmers, and he went away.
2. And he sent to the farmers at the season a slave so that he might receive from the farmers from the fruits of the vineyard.
3. And seizing him, they beat him and sent him away empty.
4. And again he sent to them another slave, and that one they beat on the head and dishonored.
5. And he sent another, and that one they killed, and he sent many others, some they beat and others they killed.
6. He still had one, a beloved son. Last, he sent him to them, saying, “They will respect my son.”
7. But those tenant farmers said to one another, “This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.”
8. And seizing him, they killed him, and they threw him out of the vineyard.
9. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and he will destroy the tenant farmers, and he will give the vineyard to others.
10. Have you not read this scripture: “A stone which the builders rejected, this one became the cornerstone”
11. This came to be from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes?”
12. And they sought to seize him, and they feared the crowd, for they knew that he spoke the parable against them, and leaving him, they went away.
13. And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians in order that they might trap him by what he said.
14. And after they came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and you do not care what others think, for you do not seek the approval of men, but you truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not. Should we pay or not pay?”
15. Because he knew their hypocrist, he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring to me a denarius in order that I might see it.”
16. And they brought it. And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to him, “Caesar’s”
17. But Jesus said to them, “Give the things of Caesar to Caesar, and give the things of God to God.” And they were utterly amazed.
18. And some Sadducees, who said there is no resurrection, came to him and questioned him, saying,
19. “Teacher, Moses wrote to us, that if a brother of someone dies, and he leaves a wife, and he does not leave a child, that this brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
20. There were seven brothers, and the first took a wife, and dying, he did not leave offspring.
21. And the second took her and died not leaving offspring; and the third likewise;
22. And the seven did not leave offspring. Last of all, the woman also died.
23. In the resurrection, when they arise, whose wife will she be, for the seven had her as a wife?”
24. Jesus said to them, “Are you not led astray because of this: You do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?
25. For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in heaven.
26. Now concerning the dead, that they are raised: have you not read in the Book of Moses at the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
27. He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly mistaken.”
28. And coming, one of the scribes, having heard them disputing and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which is the first commandment of all?”
29. Jesus answered, “The first is, Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
30. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.
31. This is the second: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is not another commandment greater than these.”
32. And the scribe said to him, “Well said, Teacher. Truly, you said that He is one, and there is not another except Him.
33. And to love Him with all one’s heart, and with all one’s understanding, and with all one’s strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
34. And Jesus, seeing him that he answered wisely, said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And no one any longer dared to question him.
35. And answering, Jesus said, as he was teaching in the temple, “How do the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?
36. David himself said in the Holy Spirit, “The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet.’
37. David himself calls him Lord, and how is He the son of him?” And the large crowd heard him gladly.
38. And in his teaching, he said, “Watch out for the scribes who desire to walk about in long robes and who desire greetings in the marketplace,
39. And the first seats in synagogues, and places of honor at meals,
40. They devour the houses of widows and, in pretense, make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
41. And sitting opposite the offering box, he saw the crowd putting money into the offering box. And many wealthy people were putting in much.
42. And one poor widow came and put in two lepta, which is a kodrantes.
43. And after calling his disciples, he said to them, “Truly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those putting into the treasury.
44. For all, out of their abundance, they put in, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she had, all her livelihood.”
