Dumb Questions
Some questions are just plain ol’ dumb. Sometimes it’s possible to perceive beforehand that he is about to ask such a question prefaces it by saying, “I’m going to ask a dumb question but …” At other times, he does not realize he has asked a dumb question until it has already been spoken.
That appears to be the situation with some people in the village of Bethphage, a couple of miles from Jerusalem. As Jesus and his disciples approached the village, Jesus told two of the disciples—tradition has named these two as Peter and John—to go into the village where they would find a colt and its mother tied. They were to untie the colt and bring it to Jesus so that he could ride it into Jerusalem. The disciples went into the village, found the colt, and began to untie it. “And some of those standing there said to them, ‘What are you doing, loosing the colt?’” (Mark 11:5)
On the surface, this looks like a dumb question, for it was obvious that the disciples were untying the colt. On a deeper level, however, the question had merit. Two strangers were untying a colt that was clearly not their property. Perhaps the colt’s owner was among the bystanders. In fact, it was a legitimate question.
Often a believer asks the Father, “What are you doing?” On the surface, it sounds like a dumb question—how can a finite mind understand the infinite plan? Yet it is a legitimate question, for one wants to be sure he is acting in accordance with the Father’s will. More often than not, the answer is: “The Lord has need of it.”
