Chapter 13
Close literal translation
1. And as he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, behold what sort of stones and what sort of buildings!”
2. And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There certainly will not be left here stone upon stone which will not be cast down.”
3. And as he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew asked him privately,
4. Tell us, when will these things be? And what is the sign when all these things are about to be completed?
5. But Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out, lest someone deceive you.
6. Many will come in my name saying, “I am he,” and they will deceive many.
7. But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is not yet.
8. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
9. But you watch yourselves. They will hand you over to councils and synagogues. You will be beaten, and you will stand before governors and kings on account of me as a witness to them.
10. And first it is necessary to preach the gospel to all nations.
11. And when they arrest you, handing you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you will say, but whatever is given to you in that hour, this speak, for you are not the one speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
12. And brother will hand over brother to death, and father child, and children will rise up against parents and will have them put to death.
13. And you will be hated by all because of my name, but the one who endures to the end, this one will be saved.
14. But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it ought not—let the reader understand—then let those in Judea flee to the mountains.
15. And let the one upon the roof not go down nor go inside to take anything from his house.
16. And the one in the field must not return to the things behind to take his garment.
17. But woe to those who are pregnant and those nursing in those days!
18. But pray that it might not be during winter,
19. For those days will be tribulation, such a time as has not happened from the beginning of creation, which God created, until now, and will never ever be again.
20. And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no flesh would have survived, but because of the elect, whom he elected, he cut short the days.
21. And then if someone says to you, “Look, here is the Christ; look there!” do not believe it.
22. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect.
23. But you, watch out. I have told you beforehand all things.
24. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
25. And the stars will be falling from the heavens, and the powers which are in the heavens will be shaken.
26. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
27. And then he will send his angels, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth and until the end of heaven.
28. But from the fig tree learn this parable: As soon as its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
29. Thus also you, whenever you see these things happening, know that the time is near, at the door.
30. Truly, I say to you that this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happen.
31. The heaven and the earth will pass away, but my word will certainly not pass away.
32. But concerning that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, except the Father.
33. Watch out, be alert, for you do not know when the time is.
34. As a man going away on a journey, having left his house, having given to his servants authority, to each his work, and to the doorkeeper, he commanded that he stay alert and watch.
35. Therefore, you watch, for you do not know when the lord of the house is coming—in the evening, or midnight, or cock crowing, or in the morning.
36. Lest, if he comes suddenly, he find you sleeping.
37. But what I say to you, I say to all—stay alert.
