At the Door
Most houses have a doorbell; some have a doorknocker; still others rely on the rap of a knuckle. Recently, I came to a house and looked for a button or knocker, but there was neither one, so I hit the door with my knuckle. Inside, someone called out, “See who’s at the door.” A moment later, a man came and opened the door.
In Jesus’ lesson to the disciples about the future, he first spoke about Jerusalem, then turned to the Son of Man’s appearance. This monumental event would be preceded by certain phenomena. Bible scholars debate whether Jesus was still referring to the future of Jerusalem or the second coming of the Son of Man. Whatever the case, he said, “Thus also you, whenever you see these things happening, know that the time is near, at the door.” (Mark 13:29)
It could be that Jesus’ statement has both an eschatological and an existential interpretation, that is, both a future and a present application. For the future, the message is to always be prepared. For the present, the Son of Man is at hand, at the door. “Come in, Jesus. You are always welcome.”
