Motives
It is easy to misjudge someone’s motives. It is just as easy to misjudge one’s own motives. In St. Mark’s account of the woman who anointed Jesus’ head with oil, she does not speak a single word, so no one knows what motivated her generous act of kindness toward Jesus. None of the writers (Matt. 26:5-9; Luke 7:36-50; this may not be the same incident) indicate that there was any attempt by those present to assess the motives of this woman. “But some were expressing indignation to one another: ‘Why has this waste of the perfume come about?’” (Mark 14:4)
It is important to be cautious when evaluating any act of kindness, lest we be classed with the grumblers in Simon’s house.
